The Man From Snowy River by A.B. 'Banjo' Patterson

This is only the first of 13 verses that make up Banjo Patterson’s well known poem.  Do you know the rest?  Why not click on the YouTube clip below to listen to the whole poem.  The poem was originally published in a newspaper called ‘The Bulletin’ on 26th of April, 1890.  123 years ago!!!

The poem tells the story of a horseback pursuit to recapture the colt of a prizewinning racehorse that escaped from its paddock and is living with the brumbies. Eventually the brumbies descend a seemingly impassably steep slope, at which point the assembled riders give up the pursuit, except the young hero, who spurs his pony down the side of a really big cliff to catch the mob.

There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from old Regret had got away,
And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
Had mustered at the homestead overnight,
For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stock horse snuffs the battle with delight. (Patterson, A.B., 1890).

For all ages.  Click here for complete poem…

And have a look at this amazing clip, 'Jim's Ride' taken from the The Man from Snowy River movie.  Don't try that at home guys!!
